Wood for your bunk beds

Bunk beds should be constructed of wood. The more common woods used in the
construction of bunk beds are softwoods which come from conifers. These
include spruce, pine and fir. All of these woods are easy to obtain
throughout the U.S. and make for a very sturdy well-constructed bed. Pine is
very commonly used in the construction of bunk beds. Pine comes in many
varieties from different parts of the world. In the U.S., eastern white
pine, ponderosa pine and sugar pine are some of the varieties used in
constructing furniture, including bunk beds. All of the pine woods have a
yellowish color with brown knots, which makes it a nice wood for staining.

Other woods that are sturdy include cedar and cypress, but these woods are
more expensive. Cedar is a very durable wood known for its fragrance.

Hardwoods come from deciduous trees such as oak, ash and hickory and make
for good sturdy furniture, but are usually very expensive and much harder to
construct using basic equipment, as they are very heavy. Overall, oak is the
most popular of woods used in furniture. It is a hard open-grained wood, is
very strong and can live up to everyday abuse. Ash comes primarily from the
Northeast and Canada. It is also very strong and is often used in bed frames
and hidden parts of the bed. Hickory is a wood derived from the walnut
family and is often used in rustic-type furniture.

Commonly used woods for constructing beds are #1 and Dense Select grades of
Southern Yellow Pine. If a little extra care is taken in choosing the
boards, a #2 grade of pine can be used.
